Hospitals / Health Insurance

Provides the information required in cases of sudden illness or injury.

Sudden Illness

Calling an Ambulance

Dial 119 to call an ambulance in case of sudden illness or injury. State "Kyukyu Desu (Emergency)" once you get connected. Next, state your location, the age and gender of the patient, the details of the illness or injury, as well as your own name and telephone number. Using an ambulance is free of charge but unavailable for minor illnesses or injuries.

Nighttime / Holidays

Emergency medical centers can be found in all districts and are available in case you fall ill or feel sick at night, on a Sunday, or another holiday. They are listed on the website and PR brochure of each town and city.

Hospitals

The medical institutions available in Japan include private clinics and general hospitals equipped with hospitalization and examination facilities. Go to a nearby clinic in case of a minor illness, and visit a general hospital if you need a detailed examination, surgery, etc.

When going to a hospital, always bring your Hokensho or National Health Insurance card, and submit it at the reception in order to reduce the amount that you will be required to pay. If the cost of treatment is excessively high, you may also be eligible for deductions from high medical fees, etc.

Receiving regular health checkups helps prevent illness. Health checkups are provided by companies, local health centers, etc.

Health Insurance

All residents of Japan are required to subscribe to a public health insurance policy. Company workers must be enrolled in Employees' Health Insurance (social insurance), and the rest must be enrolled in National Health Insurance. Employees' Health Insurance members are entitled to sickness and accident benefits if they have to take leave from work owing to illnesses or injuries not related to their jobs.

Life insurance is another form of health insurance being offered by private insurance companies. It covers the costs involved in hospitalization, out-patient treatment, and surgery in exchange for payment of a predetermined premium.
