How we started
In the Higashinada area, there are many residents from Brazil, Peru, China, and the Philippines who work for various companies such as food factories. There are also students from abroad, interns, and temporary international businessmen and their families. Most of the volunteers have completed courses to teach Japanese as a second language at college or other institutes so we started our classes hoping that it would enable Japanese and non-Japanese to build up relationships through respecting and learning from each other.
Workshops
Three kinds of workshops:
1. To help beginners teaching Japanese, facilitated by the veterans whenever necessary.
2. Step up Class by teachers of Japanese language schools:10 hours a year
3. To help volunteers who want to know how to teach and to answer their questions on teaching Japanese: 4 times a year.
Other Activities
Tutoring school children, daily life counseling, exchange parties with students (a party under cherry blossoms, barbecuing party and a Christmas party). Issuing newsletters (4 issues/year).
Strength/Features
With the motto "Each of us plays the important part of Nihongo Hiroba Okamoto", we seek to create a group in which every volunteer can work actively and with fun. In the future we hope that students who have learned with us will join us as a committee person. Also, we would like to do activities as requested by learners.
Weakness/Problems
Members have very few chances to get to know those who come on different days of the week. Our members are unbalanced in terms of the proportion of men and women (a ratio 9:48).
Number of Members (as of 12/ 07)
Volunteers: 52 Students: 48
